Process
I carried out this project with Rafael de Lavergne (Ecole Polytechnique), Edgar Meauxsoone (Ecole Polytechnique), and Myriam El Jaafari (Strate - Ecole de Design).
- The first part of our work was to conduct interviews with potential users to understand their needs. We observed that being active and generating income was two most important aspects they missed from their working life. Hence we decided to focus on those two important needs.
- Then, we determined that the best way for our potential users to fill those gaps was to sell goods they wanted to get rid of. Based on the observation that classified ads websites were hard to use for the elderly, we decided to re-design these websites into an object familiar to them: the radio.
- Finally, we defined all the features we wanted to include on our device. We integrated them into the radio in the most intuitive manner for users not accustomed with technology. We used Raspberry Pi and laser cutting to build our prototype.
By the end of the project we almost reached our minimum viable product. Next steps for this ambitious project would have been carrying out user testings to refine our product.
Targeting the elderly, we knew that our device needed to be really easy-to-use and understandable. That is why we have chosen the radio because it is an object the elderly is familiar with. We adapted it so that it can include intuitive features for our purpose: range of diffusion, different channels etc.
Radio Annonce is a connected device that enables the elderly to stay active and to generate income after they have retired. With this radio, the user can take pictures of objects he wants to sell, record an advertisement about it that will be played to other users in the same area and be put in contact with other users (buyers or sellers).
